What Are Retractable RV Awnings?

Recreation vehicles are your homes when on a travel, the home on wheels where you spend most of the day and nights. Hence it is important that your RV comes with all amenities that one may require in your travels. In this post, I will try to throw light over the utilities of retractable RV awnings, its role in enhancing the livability in a recreation vehicle and simple steps to keep it in good condition for a longer period of time.

Retractable types give the customer an enhanced level of control over the RV awnings. That is, while stopping somewhere on the way for lunch or simply to take in some fresh air, retractable awnings can be projected out to give oneself the much needed shade against sun or rain and to an extent, privacy, thus ensuring better livability in the vehicle as a whole.

Moreover, with retractable RV awnings, one can change the pitch and depth of the cover so that one can manage to have maximum shade or little shade in the matter of few seconds, by pulling a lever that adjusts the tension on the fabric. If it is an electronically adjustable retractable awning, then one can control it from a distance, even without moving physically from the place where he/she sits at the given point of time.

But, as retractable RV awnings has this control arms and associate circuitry (assuming electronic types), there is an inherent chance of it getting damaged at some point of time due to continuous use. Also, the very elements for which RV awnings have been designed – rain and snow – can act as its undoers in a longer run. If not properly set, most RV awnings may act as a sail in the wind and pools collecting water during rains. Manual types come with a ‘rain release’ setting but similar utilities are absent in the electronic types. Awning bows, now available in the market, can solve the problem to an extent, but it could damage the fabric on continuous use.

Therefore, the best way to take care of your retractable RV awnings is to check regularly for any possible damage, mainly to the electronic circuit and its lever mechanism. Make sure before every trip that the fabric carries no damage. If there is any, fix it promptly before it could potentially go out of hand. Also, while traveling, take care that the awnings remain secured to the vehicle free from any protrusions or sag. If it projects out, the force of the current of air falling on it as the RV moves can tear the fabric apart.

Last, but not the least, regularly clean the awning fabric with a cleaner recommended by the awning manufacturer.

Taking care of retractable RV awnings is not the simplest of the tasks. In my next post I will prvide you with simple steps to take care of your RV awnings. RV awning owners needs to be constantly on guard to ensure that everything indeed is fine and in good shape. But the charm and elegance it brings to your recreation vehicle is worth the effort spent.

See you next time!
